Founded in 2004 by Padmashri-nominated guru Smt. Kavitha Mohanty, Natyalaya has grown from a small studio in Bhubaneswar into one of India's most respected classical dance academies. Our curriculum is rooted in the Guru-Shishya tradition, ensuring that every student inherits not just technique, but the spiritual depth and cultural wisdom that gives Odissi its soul.

We hold the belief that Odissi is not simply a performing art — it is a living prayer. Our mission is to create dancers who carry this sacred tradition forward with authenticity, artistry, and humility.

2004
Natyalaya is Founded
Guru Kavitha Mohanty opens a small studio in Bhubaneswar with just twelve students, dedicated to teaching authentic Odissi.
2009
First Arangetrams
Our earliest batch of students complete their formal solo debuts, marking the academy's first generation of trained artists.
2014
National Recognition
Natyalaya is honoured with the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for outstanding contribution to classical dance education.
2018
Going International
Our troupe performs at festivals across Europe and the USA, and we begin our first international workshop tours.
2021
Online Academy Launches
We bring Odissi to students worldwide through live online classes, extending the Guru-Shishya tradition across borders.
2024
20 Years of Natyalaya
We celebrate two decades of teaching, with over 500 students trained and 100+ performances staged across the world.

The Guru

Dance is not merely movement — it is devotion expressed through the body.

With over 35 years of dedicated study, performance, and teaching, Kavitha Mohanty is regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the Kelucharan Mohapatra gharana. She has performed at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Khajuraho Dance Festival, and international stages across Europe, USA, and Japan. Her teaching honours the rigour of tradition while nurturing each student's individual artistic voice.
